The word 'salad' is often used pretty loosely. For instance, on this episode of 'The Hungry Cowboy' I'm chopping up some apples and some Snickers bars and tossing them with vanilla pudding and whipped cream and calling it a salad. Who's to say? And that's just it. Who IS to say? I get confused about what is and what is not considered a salad. For most of us, a couple of things come to mind when we think of salad. First, it's your leafy greens tossed with fun veggies or perhaps a little fruit and a dressing of choice. Second, it's your typical potato salads and macaroni salads and the like. Much beyond that, things get pretty grey.
Is salad something that should always be able to be eaten on its own? If so, egg salad and tuna salad and turkey salad barely qualify, since they're most often eaten in sandwich form, or at least with crackers. Then you have things like cranberry salad, which seems to be more of a jello than a salad. I suppose if simply being able to eat it on its own is the primary qualifier for being a salad, than fruit salad works just fine, even though it seems to me to be nothing more than chopped up fruit dressed up as...well, chopped up fruit, I suppose.
It seems a bit audacious to call anything with pudding and Snickers bars in it a salad. It just doesn't feel right, if only from a moral place. It's like telling a kid that he or she can have their dessert only after they eat all of their salad. That's a fine tactic when the salad is, I don't know, even a little bit healthy. But when the pre-dessert salad is more like pre-dessert dessert, then my, what a slippery slope we have created! But you know what? It says 'salad' in the title, so I think it's still okay. Plus, it has apples in it, and they're healthy, right?
